This is one of our favourite mother-daughter design duo projects! One of our customer approached us to do a room makeover for a Christmas surprise for her daughter. I’m not going to lie, I almost said no. It was just a rapid turn around and had so many moving parts. I mentioned it to my daughter, Erika, and within the hour she had a Pinterest board ready with some products already sourced online. So, we decided to go ahead with the project, and I am glad we did! It was so much fun.

One caveat that we had for this project was a 3 day window when our clients daughter would be at grandmas house. We had 4 weeks to prepare, order, store everything and get it all laid out and then 72 hours to transform the space!

So how do we go about doing a project like this?

Step One: We speak over the phone, hear about your idea, budget, vision and timeline.

Step Two: We come to your home and view the space and bring some ideas (paper samples and paint colours) to get the ball rolling.

Step Three: We make calls and research your idea. We reach out to our contractors to line them up (this one required a painter and paper hanger that could get this all done in one day!) and we start to bring together the vision. Find the paper, the paint colour, the items for purchase and start to order items.

Step Four: Breathe and problem solve as you coordinate and navigate through the chaos of a three day bedroom makeover!

We collected everything we could in advance. Boy, our client was a huge help! She went to Pottery Barn and picked things up. We ordered the drapes and had them hemmed and pressed in advance, ready for pick up on the day they were to be hung.

We also learned a valuable lesson - things just look bigger online! Always check the measurements. As always, problems arise. The initial desk came with a flaw and we had to problem solve in one day. We ended up using IKEA drawers with a butcher block top from their counter section that was on sale. It turned out even better then we could have imagined.

The flying keys mobile was ordered from Etsy and came beautifully packaged. Other items we wanted to order would have taken too long in our timeline. It sure helps to have an artist on the project. My daughter Erika sent quite a few nights making in her studio to create the Platform 9 and 3/4 sign and the directional signpost that is hanging on the wall.

As with any fan, the young lady (that is room was for) already owned several Harry Potter items, such as her Gryffindor blanket and outfit (hanging in the closet photo) and even some wands!

In the end, we had a really fun time working on this project and we are so grateful to have been invited to make it a reality!
